What to Include in a Florida Car Bill of Sale

Florida's official combined Form HSMV 82050 contains the bill of sale fields. Whether you use the FLHSMV form or a custom bill of sale (e.g. from CarSaleDoc), make sure the document captures all of the fields below — county tax collectors will accept any well-drafted document that includes them.

Required / recommended fields

  • Seller's full legal name, address, signature and printed name.
  • Buyer's full legal name, address, signature and printed name.
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN — 17 characters).
  • Year, make, model and body type.
  • Florida title number (from the seller's current title).
  • Current odometer reading (in miles) at the time of sale.
  • Sale price in U.S. dollars (or indication that the vehicle is a gift).
  • Date of sale.
  • An "as-is" clause — Florida private sales are presumed as-is with no implied warranty.

Florida-specific witness / notary requirement

  • Florida requires the seller's signature and the buyer's signature on the BACK OF THE TITLE to be either (a) witnessed by two persons OR (b) notarized.
  • The witnesses or notary do NOT need to sign the bill of sale itself — only the title transfer.
  • Many sellers prefer notarization (banks, UPS Stores and tax collector offices often have one) because it's a single official acknowledgement.

Recommended additional details

  • Method of payment (cash, certified check, bank transfer).
  • Disclosure of any known damage, salvage history or mechanical defects.
  • Statement that Florida plates stayed with the seller (Florida default).
  • Photos of the odometer, VIN plate and overall condition.
CarSaleDoc generates a Florida bill of sale with all of these fields plus the as-is clause and photo exhibits. The buyer then files Form HSMV 82040 at the county tax collector, and the seller files the Notice of Sale (Form HSMV 82050) online with FLHSMV to release liability.
